Recombu’s Andrew Lim on ‘Mobile needs fresh eyes’

Posted by Lucy June 3 2010 05:21pm

I often find myself in rooms filled with sweaty people talking about ‘mobile’ in bizarre, almost abstract ways. I don’t bother telling my girlfriend about the various mobile events I go to because most of the time I’m not sure I’ve understood them.

Mobile is the new age-defying moisturiser, it’s Lady Gaga, it’s a never-ending Gap advert, it’s a new type of Mars bar, it’s… If you sit through enough mobile events you will eventually concede that almost no one really knows what they’re talking about.

When I studied anthropology at university we didn’t figure stuff out by observing and listening to other anthropologists, we went into the wild. If you really care about where mobile is going then start talking, and more importantly listening, to people outside of the industry.

I’m not suggesting you go to Pret and start talking to the cashier about the iPhone but why don’t we organise more events that look out. No, I don’t mean inviting advertising and marketing people to come and speak, I mean inviting people that can add truly unique perspectives.

These events might not make you feel good, they might not encourage you to join Twitter or create a location-based app but they will offer you something different.
