I read a very entertaining report from celebrity gossip website Holy Moly the other day. In their ever-amusing quest to undermine the egos of celebsville, they have created a formula to determine the most self-obsessed celebrities on Twitter.
100-(100 divided by f1 multiplied by f2)=tool percentage when: f1=followers f2=following
(‘tool’ being the term they’ve used to describe a particularly narcissistic celebrity).
In short, they’ve looked at how many followers a celebrity has, and then compared this to the number of people the celebrity follows. This tells Holy Moly if someone is using twitter as a two-way communications tool (speaking and listening) or whether someone is using Twitter to blast out their thoughts and bask in the @replies from their followers.
Russell Brand topped their list of self-obsessed tweeters while Twitter darling Stephen Fry scored pretty well, coming in at a respectable 40th position on the self-absorbed scale.
I don’t want to take this too seriously, but I thought it was an interesting observation into Twettiquette. If you’re represent a brand on Twitter, it would pay to follow your followers to avoid appearing too self-important and to really benefit from the two-way conversational opportunities that Twitter affords.
Have a look at the Holy Moly report here (warning, if you’re easily offended and don’t like swear words, you might want to avoid clicking on this).
Thanks to Holy Moly for the picture
