Here at Komodo we’re always on the look-out for new and exciting ways to communicate, and we’re predicting this to be the next big thing in the social media world: Introducing you all to Foursquare, a social media platform that tracks where you are, where your friends are and recommends places to go relevant to the city you are in.
Foursquare is a free app that you can download to your phone – iPhone, Android or any other web enabled handset.
The name of the game is to tell your friends your whereabouts by ‘checking-in’ to Foursquare and recommending places to go, be it a bar, club or pub etc. The more you ‘check-in’ the more you learn what’s hot and what’s not so hot in certain locations. You can unlock tips from other Foursquare users revealing things like the best cocktail to order in bar ‘x’ and where your next stop should be – great if you’re on a bit of a pub crawl! Eventually you’re able to build up a To-Do list of places to go, and things to do, through suggestions from other Foursquare users based on your personal ‘check-ins’.
For those who enjoy a bit of healthy competition between friends, use Foursquare to earn points and unlock badges by ‘checking-in’. If you find a new restaurant in your town, you earn yourself 5 points. Get an extra 2 points by visiting a range of places in one night, and if you can manage to get your friends to ‘check-in’ with you then, yes you’ve guessed it, you can earn even more points. The more points you get the more badges you’ll be able to unlock and so on and so on, you get the gist!
And if you like bagging yourself a few freebies, then you’ll be pleased to know that Foursquare has a specials programme encouraging customer loyalty to local businesses. So where do the freebies come in? You have to become ‘Mayor’ of a certain café, bar or place by ‘checking-in’ there more times than any other Foursquare user. By showing your phone and Foursquare profile to the staff of that venue demonstrating your loyalty to their business, they offer things like a free drink, coffee, food etc.
The way to think about this is part social network, part recommendation service and part competition against thousands of different people. And that’s Foursquare in a nutshell….try it here.
