The gay mafia is at it again. Not content with leaping on the social networking bandwagon long before Facebook was but a twinkle in Mark Zuckerberg’s eye (see Gaydar), the latest app craze to appear on any self-respecting gay man’s iPhone is the free app Grindr.
Touted by Stephen Fry, the concept is simple. Grindr is “a killer location-based social networking” app that can help you find Mr Right or Mr Tonight, taking the immediacy culture to a new level.
Download the app, load it up and away you go – no need to register or provide any personal details, unless you want to. Using iPhone’s GPS technology, Grindr determines your exact location and then provides data on other cruising gay men close by. Trade stats, send instant messages and swap photos. You can also share your location on a map and, er, well you get the picture.
Lifestyle apps are as popular as ever and introducing the much-hyped location based services concept into the mix is genius. As the apps phenomenon continues to gather pace, more and more people will look to apps to benefit their day to day lives, whether it be Ocado or Grindr. And the more immediate, unfussy and discreet the concept is the better…
