A little over two months ago, in response to Martin Veitch’s tweet, I tweeted back that both the book, and the newspaper will never die. I’m preparing to eat some humble pie. This week saw the launch of the Guardian’s new iPhone app. I’ve been using it for a little over 48 days now, and I’m starting to wonder… Do I ever need to buy the paper version again?
I’ve always liked The Guardian. Not for its editorial (I prefer The Times), its business pages (I prefer the FT), or its rugby reviews (The Telegraph wins here). It’s simply the nicest paper to read, visually.
When it comes to colour, design, layout, font, The Guardian has absolutely nailed it. It’s a great looking paper, a visual masterpiece. And whilst sitting in Nude Espresso (one of the best coffee houses in East London) as usual either before work, or on a Saturday morning, it’s the paper of choice. more

Do you Grindr?

The gay mafia is at it again. Not content with leaping on the social networking bandwagon long before Facebook was but a twinkle in Mark Zuckerberg’s eye (see Gaydar), the latest app craze to appear on any self-respecting gay man’s iPhone is the free app Grindr.
Touted by Stephen Fry, the concept is simple. Grindr is “a killer location-based social networking” app that can help you find Mr Right or Mr Tonight, taking the immediacy culture to a new level.
Download the app, load it up and away you go – no need to register or provide any personal details, unless you want to. Using iPhone’s GPS technology, Grindr determines your exact location and then provides data on other cruising gay men close by. Trade stats, send instant messages and swap photos. You can also share your location on a map and, er, well you get the picture.
Lifestyle apps are as popular as ever and introducing the much-hyped location based services concept into the mix is genius. As the apps phenomenon continues to gather pace, more and more people will look to apps to benefit their day to day lives, whether it be Ocado or Grindr. And the more immediate, unfussy and discreet the concept is the better…
